In September, sales of electric cars in the country reached a new record, up 70 percent from the same month a year earlier. This translates into 6,329 electric cars registered, reaching a market share of 8.65 percent. These figures, published by the industry associations (Anfac, Ganvam and Faconauto), indicate that for the first time electric vehicles are approaching 10% of total car and SUV sales in Spain. Moreover, this level of registrations is almost equivalent to that of diesel vehicles, a category that has dominated the market for decades.
This change represents an important milestone and reflects a profound transformation in the way people get around. Spain, although overall still lagging behind other European countries in terms of electric vehicle penetration, is showing a clear shift in trends. As of today, November 2024, there are more than 335,000 electric vehicles on the road in Spain.
