The future is electric

The forecast for electric mobility in 2030 and the growth of the present

Mobility travels toward electric

The electric car world is already experiencing its "future." The direction taken by private mobility is already going in the direction of more and more PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) or BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) vehicles on the road.

The types of electric vehicles

BEV

Battery Electric Vehicles

Refers to vehicles whose propulsion is tied exclusively to an electric motor and associated batteries. Their large-scale deployment will be increasingly linked to the availability of charging infrastructure.

PHEV

Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vechicles

These are the hybrid vehicles equipped with two propulsion systems: gasoline/diesel engine and electric motor, and have an independent charging system for both systems. Thus, they are equipped with both a fuel tank and an outlet for electric charging.

HEV

Hybrid Electric Vechicles

These are the hybrid vehicles equipped with a gasoline/diesel engine and a supporting electric motor that is recharged solely by the movement of the vehicle or the heat engine. Therefore, these vehicles do not have an outlet for electric charging and their range in pure electric is extremely limited. For these reasons, they are not considered in the market shares mentioned here.

The 2030 scenario in Italy

In the report "The Future of Electric Mobility in Italy @2035," produced by Motus-E and PwC Strategy&, the Italian market forecast to 2030 is outlined.

In detail, it is estimated that by 2030, about 10 percent of the vehicle fleet will consist of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, with a significant increase in registrations and charging points, as private investment and an acceleration of the transition to electric.

By 2035, electric mobility will see even greater growth, with the electric vehicle fleet possibly reaching more than 25 percent of the total, supported by the expansion of charging infrastructure and increasingly targeted incentive policies.

Surrounding the deployment of electric vehicles through increased supply, increasingly competitive pricing and longer battery life must also develop an infrastructure ecosystem that can support the future of mobility as it unfolds.

Electric cars internationally

The first half of 2024 in Europe

In the first half of 2024, the electric car market in Europe saw a significant increase, exceeding initial expectations. According to data provided by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), registrations of electric vehicles (BEVs and PHEVs) saw an overall growth of 25 percent compared to the same period last year.

Confirming this positive trend, gasoline car registrations decreased by 12 percent, while diesel vehicle registrations saw a 15 percent drop. Alternative-fuel cars now account for nearly 40 percent of new registrations in Europe, showing a significant shift in consumer preferences.

Compared to the first half of 2023, this has increased from about 400,000 registered alternative-fuel vehicles to more than 500,000. Italy stands at 18 percent of the European total, gaining ground over major markets such as Germany and the United Kingdom.

Electric cars and Italy

The first half of 2024 in Italy

The first few months of 2024 have also shown higher than expected sales numbers of electric vehicles in Italy and in line with what is happening internationally.

While PHEV and BEV registrations in 2023 had seen a +27.3 percent increase over the previous year, data for the six-month period January-June 2024 confirm a stabilization of the trend, with PHEV and BEV sales collectively accounting for 4.2 percent of the total, numerically represented by more than 65,000 vehicles.

At the same time, the number of electric car models on the market is growing: at the end of 2024 there were about 125 models available, a significant increase from the 102 models registered at the end of 2023, marking a growth of more than 22 percent. At the end of 2024, the EV fleet in Italy amounted to more than 270 thousand electric cars (PHEVs and BEVs).

Charging services:

more outreach is needed

Infrastructure sometimes panders, other times facilitates change in certain sectors of the economy.

In the case of electric vehicles, the ability to easily recharge one's vehicle will further drive market growth and may generate a virtuous circle for users, service providers, and automakers. Looking ahead, two different scenarios are hypothesized for the near future.

2025

By 2025 we range between 65,000 charging points in a base case scenario and 80,000 in an accelerated one.

2030

By 2030 the figures are expected to be well over 100,000. The greatest growth is imagined in the very years to follow.

Infrastructure

If in December 2023, there were more than 50,000 charging points in about 24,000 infrastructures (source: report "Public charging infrastructures in Italy," by Motus-E), the situation at the end of 2024 in our country reports more than 60,000 charging points in about 27,000 stations and 22,000 publicly accessible locations.

Benchmark

In 2024, the second quarter was a breakthrough compared to the first, with an increase of 9,661 charging points (up 17% from +12% in January-March) and 3,518 infrastructures (with similar percentages of change). Charging stations are82 percent on public land, while an 18 percent of the total are on private land.

Distribution

At the level of macro-areas of distribution, 59 percent of the infrastructure is located in northern Italy, 23 percent in the center and the remaining 18 percent in the south and islands. The most virtuous region on this figure is Lombardy (19%) with 10,158 points, followed by Piedmont (6,567 points), Veneto (5,167 points) and Lazio with about 10% each.

Power

18% of distribution points are slow-charging (power of 7 kW or less) and 75% accelerated or fast AC charging (between 7.5 kW and 43 kW). A meager 5% provide DC fast charging (44 kW and above) and just1% more high-power (greater than 100 kW).
