Trend of Electric Cars in Europe: attitudes, challenges and future prospects

Europe Electric Cars (1)

Europe is moving faster and faster toward electric mobility. Driving this transition are both increasedenvironmental awareness on the part of citizens and increasingly supportive government policies. But how ready are we really to say goodbye to combustion engines?

Now that we are two steps away from 2025, the Consumer Monitor 2023 from theEuropean Alternative Fuels Observatory(EAFO) seems to be still relevant, revealing data that tell of a Europe open to change, but not without uncertainties.

Growing but uneven interest

The numbers speak for themselves:

  • One-third of Europeans surveyed say they are ready to switch to an electric car within the next five years.
  • More than half seriously consider the idea in a broader perspective.

However, enthusiasm is not uniform across the continent:

  • Italy: 65 percent of respondents say they are willing to buy an electric vehicle.
  • Spain: this percentage rises as high as 70 percent, a sign of a very receptive market.
  • Belgium: only 22% of respondents consider the purchase imminent.

These data show how some countries are further along in the transition than others, but also how interest is influenced by local factors such as economic incentives and charging infrastructure.

The knot of costs: a still-present obstacle

While interest is growing, the cost of purchase remains a major brake. Europeans, in fact, are willing to spend an average of €20,000 on an electric car, which is higher than the €15,000 earmarked for a conventional vehicle, but not always enough to gain access to a BEV model.

The differences between countries are obvious:

  • Germany: buyers are willing to spend up to 25,000 euros, demonstrating a more mature market willing to invest.
  • Hungary: instead, the average budget stops at only 10,000 euros, a limitation that makes large-scale deployment difficult.

Why choose an electric car?

Despite their higher initial price, electric cars offer advantages that many consumers consider crucial. Prominent among them are:

  • Respect for the environment: reducing emissions is one of the main motivations for those who choose electric mobility.
  • Reduced operating costs: compared with conventional cars, electric vehicles provide significant savings on fuel and maintenance in the long run.

The combination of these two features makes electric cars an increasingly popular choice, especially for those sensitive to sustainability issues.

How and where do we charge?

Charging is another crucial issue, but data show that for many users it is not an insurmountable problem. Most Europeans charge their cars at home:

  • 55% use a home charging station regularly.
  • When traditional sockets are also considered, this percentage rises to80 percent.

In Italy, for example:

  • 54% of drivers rely on a wall charging station installed at home.
  • 25% uses a simple household outlet.

Public stations are used less frequently, and surprisingly, nearly a third of European drivers say they have never had to wait to charge.

Autonomy and satisfaction: what consumers want

Electric car users say they are generally satisfied:

  • 84% believe that the range of their vehicle is adequate for their daily needs.
  • However, there is one clear demand for the future: more range. Almost half of Europeans(47 percent) would like a range of more than 500 km, a goal that could further increase the uptake of BEVs.

The future is electric: overcoming the challenges for sustainable mobility

The EAFO report paints an optimistic picture, but not without challenges. Upfront costs remain a major barrier, as does the need to expand public charging infrastructure. However, with appropriate policies, targeted incentives, and continued technological improvement, Europe has all the cards to accelerate toward more sustainable mobility.

For policymakers and industry stakeholders, this data represents a unique opportunity to listen to consumers and build strategies that promote an effective transition. The future of electric mobility is not just a possibility, but a necessity for our planet. Want to learn more about electric cars and charging stations? Read here.
